The IPTA (International Personal Trainer Academy) is my top NCCA accredited personal trainer certification for most new trainers. Its $399 Rookie package has the lowest entry price of the top 7 certifications and includes the exam, textbook, a free AI tutor, study guide, exam simulator and flashcards. IPTA also offers the quickest study time at 4 to 8 weeks, and its $799 MVP package includes free recertification, business courses, a free training website, access to Meso (a client coaching app), along with a free certification of your choice.
ISSA is another good option for bundling certifications, and my third top pick is NASM, for its brand recognition and its OPT model.
The NCCA directory currently lists 14 accredited personal trainer certification programs. ISSA, NASM and ACE each also sell an exam that is not NCCA accredited, so make sure you book the accredited one.
In this guide I rank the seven best options, compare them on price, study time, exam and renewal, and show you how to check any certification in the directory. Be sure to take the quiz to find which NCCA accredited certification fits your goals.
What are the best NCCA accredited personal trainer certifications?
| Rank | Certification | Best for | Entry price with the accredited exam | PT Pioneer rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1. IPTA CPT – Check Them Out | Best value, lowest entry price and shortest study time of the seven | $399 (Rookie) | 9.8/10 |
| 2 | 2. ISSA CPT – Check Them Out | Best for bundling nutrition and a specialization | $868 | 9.0/10 |
| 3 | 3. NASM CPT – Check Them Out | Best for brand recognition and the OPT model | $999 | 8.5/10 |
| 4 | 4. NSCA-CPT | Best lead-in to strength and conditioning | $781 | 7.8/10 |
| 5 | 5. NCSF-CPT – Check Them Out | Best for learning the essentials | $449 | 7.6/10 |
| 6 | 6. ACE-CPT – Check Them Out | Best for behavior change coaching | $692.40 | 7.0/10 |
| 7 | 7. ACSM-CPT | Best for a clinical or research direction | $565 | 6.0/10 |
Rows 1 to 3 are my picks, and rows 4 to 7 are also worth a look. All seven were listed as accredited programs in the NCCA directory when I checked on October 7, 2026, and the full list of 14 is further down the page.
I scored each one out of 10 on Credibility and Reputation, Study Materials, Cost/Value and Exam Process. The overall rating is the average of those four scores.
How I ranked these certifications
I scored each one out of 10 on:
- Credibility and Reputation
- Study Materials
- Cost/Value
- Exam Process
The overall rating is the average of those four scores.
How do the best NCCA accredited certifications compare?
This table quotes every price and exam figure for the accredited exam only, so you can compare these CPTs like for like.
| Certification | Entry price with study material | Average study time | Exam | Pass mark as stated by the organization | Retake fee | Recertification |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IPTA CPT | $399 Rookie, exam included | 4 to 8 weeks | 135 questions, 180 minutes, online with live remote proctor | 72% | Free and unlimited on MVP ($199 on Rookie) | First renewal free on MVP, then $99 every 2 years (24 CEUs) |
| ISSA via NCCPT | $868 sale ($1,068 list), exam included | 3 months or more | 125 questions, 120 minutes, proctored | Scaled score of 550 out of 800 | $99 | Every 2 years, 20 hours, $99 waived if all CEUs earned through ISSA |
| NASM CPT | $999 Self-Study, exam included | 2 to 3 months | 120 questions, 120 minutes, proctored closed book | Scaled score of 70 | $199 | Every 2 years, 2.0 CEUs (20 hours), $99 |
| NSCA-CPT | $781 non-member (exam $435 plus Essential Collection $346) | Varies with your background | 155 questions (140 scored), 180 minutes, proctored with some video clips | Scaled score of 70 | $435 non-member, $300 member | Every 3 years, 6.0 CEUs (60 hours), $35 to $90 |
| NCSF-CPT | $449 sale ($899 list), exam included | 2 to 3 months | 150 questions, 180 minutes, proctored | 70% | $99 in US and Canada, $299 elsewhere | Every 2 years, 10 CEUs (20 hours), $85 |
| ACE-CPT | $692.40 (Basic $593.40 plus $99 accredited exam) | 3 to 6 months | 150 questions, proctored in person or live remote | Scaled score of 500 out of 800 | $249 | Every 2 years, 2.0 CECs (20 hours), $129 |
| ACSM-CPT | $565 (exam $410 plus two prep textbooks $155) | Not published | 135 items (120 scored), 150 minutes, proctored | Scaled score of 550 out of 800 | $205 | Every 3 years, 45 CECs, $60 |
A scaled score is not a percentage, so a scaled 70 does not mean you got 70% of the questions right. CEUs and CECs are continuing education units and credits, the ongoing learning you complete to renew.
The average study times are each organization’s own figures, and IPTA’s 4 to 8 weeks is the shortest of them. NSCA and ACSM do not publish a single figure.
Here is what stands out to me. IPTA’s Rookie package has the lowest entry price of the seven at $399, and that price includes the exam, the digital textbook with its AI tutor, the study guide, the exam simulator and flashcards.
IPTA also has the shortest average study time in the table, and its MVP package at $799 is where I see the best value. MVP currently includes a second certification, and retakes are free and unlimited.
Among the seven entry packages, NCSF and ISSA share the lowest retake fee at $99, and NCSF’s $85 renewal is the lowest two-year renewal fee of the seven.
ACE sells its accredited exam as a $99 add-on to every package. ACSM and NSCA sell the exam on its own, so your real starting cost includes the textbooks or the study collection.
The seven NCCA accredited certifications ranked
Let’s dive in, starting with my top pick.
1. IPTA CPT: Best value, lowest entry price and shortest study time of the seven

IPTA Personal Training Certification
- Entry price: $399 (Rookie package, exam included); MVP package $799
- Study material: Included: digital textbook with a free AI tutor, study guide, exam simulator and flashcards
- Prerequisites: 18 or older, high school diploma, CPR/AED
- Exam format: 135 questions, 180 minutes, online with live remote proctor
- Exam passing score: 72%
- Exam pass rate: 75%
- Retake fee: Free and unlimited on MVP ($199 on Rookie)
- Recertification: First renewal free on MVP, then $99 every 2 years (24 CEUs)
- Average study time: 4 to 8 weeks
IPTA Overview
The IPTA CPT is the NCCA accredited personal trainer certification from IPTA that starts at $399 for the Rookie package with the exam and study material included, is fully online and self-study, and has an average study time of 4 to 8 weeks.
The IPTA is a fantastic choice for aspiring personal trainers. I rank it first for three reasons: price, study time and value.
Lowest entry price. The Rookie package is $399, the lowest entry price of the seven. It includes the accredited exam, the digital textbook, an interactive study guide, an exam simulator with practice questions and a flashcard system. The textbook reader has a free AI tutor. Ask it any question about the course content and it searches the entire textbook for the answer.
Shortest study time. IPTA puts its average study time at 4 to 8 weeks, the shortest figure of the seven. The time saving comes from how its Fast-Track system works. The AI tutor answers from the textbook, so you are not hunting for the passage, and the exam simulator and flashcards are built in. On the MVP package, SurePass AI predicts your exam readiness, and weak point training and tailored study plans point your time at what you have not mastered yet.
Best value. The MVP package at $799 is where I believe IPTA separates itself. You get everything in Rookie and the three MVP tools above, plus an audio study guide, magic mnemonics, study streaks, an exam date tracker and the essential cheat sheet.
MVP also comes with these bonuses:
- A second certification of your choice. MVP currently includes one more IPTA certification, and nutrition is likely to be the most popular pick.
- Free, unlimited exam retakes. On Rookie, each retake is $199.
- A free first recertification. You also pick a continuing education course, and it supplies the CEUs you need to renew.
- Meso Core for two years. Meso is IPTA’s app for coaching and managing clients. Its AI drafts programs from a client’s logged history, PRs, injuries and equipment, and it handles nutrition logging, contracts and payments.
- A free trainer website, kept for life, so you have a site of your own to market your services.
- Trainer Stack business courses. These are eight courses on the business side of coaching: pricing, delivery, retention and operations. They include Business Foundations for Personal Trainers and Client Acquisition System II: Getting Clients.
- The Job Assurance Guarantee. Finding your first job as a brand-new personal trainer can be daunting, so it is nice to have that behind you.
- CPR/AED certification, which is an online course with a two-year card.
The MVP payment plan is $49 down plus 11 payments of $89, or $1,028 in total, so paying $799 up front saves you $229. The Rookie package has no payment plan.
- Entry price: $399 Rookie includes the certification and exam, digital textbook with a free AI tutor, interactive study guide, exam simulator and flashcard system
- Upgrade worth knowing: MVP at $799 adds the MVP study tools and the bonuses listed above
- Pass rate: 75%
- Prerequisites: 18 or older, high school diploma, CPR/AED
- Average study time: 4 to 8 weeks
Pros and Cons
- Lowest entry price of the seven: $399 on the Rookie package, exam and study material included
- Shortest average study time of the seven: 4 to 8 weeks
- Best value in my rankings: the $799 MVP package, with a second certification currently included
- No live classes. It is fully online and self-study
- Newer name, though it holds the same NCCA accreditation as NASM and ACE
You can also pair the accredited IPTA CPT with more certifications through the IPTA bundle builder. The Essential Trainer is $799 for the CPT plus one more certification, the Elite Trainer is $999 for the CPT plus three, and the Master Trainer is $1,199 for all six IPTA certifications. Only the CPT is NCCA accredited.

ISSA Overview
The ISSA CPT from the International Sports Sciences Association starts at $868 on sale with study material and the accredited NCCPT exam included, is NCCA accredited by way of its NCCPT subsidiary, and is strong on resistance training programming.
I rank ISSA second because its value is clearest when you plan to stack credentials. If you already know you want nutrition coaching plus a specialization, the Elite Trainer bundle gets you all three in one purchase. My ISSA Nutritionist review covers the nutrition half of that bundle.
I took and passed the ISSA exam on the first attempt, but I recommend you spend time studying and use a study guide.
The exam to book: the proctored NCCPT CPT exam, not ISSA’s own open-book, untimed exam.
- Entry price: $868 on sale ($1,068 list) includes the textbook, online course, extra online study materials, practice tests and exam entry
- Upgrade worth knowing: the Elite Trainer bundle (CPT plus Nutritionist plus one specialization) has a $1,500 normal price and is $963 through PT Pioneer’s link
- Pass rate: 75% on the accredited NCCPT exam
- Prerequisites: CPR/AED and high school diploma
- Average study time: 3 months or more
Pros and Cons
- CPT, nutrition and a specialization in one bundle
- Entirely online, with a business section in the text
- Limited behavior change coverage
- Less attention to corrective exercise and screening
My full ISSA review covers the course in detail, and my free ISSA study guide is a good warm-up. Torn between my top two? Read IPTA vs. ISSA.

NASM Personal Training Certification
- Entry price: $999 Self-Study, exam included

- Average study time: 2 to 3 months
- Complete curriculum study preparation
- Audio guide, flashcards, and mnemonics

- Highest exam pass rate
- Exam pass refund guarantee
- Cheaper pricing than NASM materials
- Curriculum study preparation
- Video and written curriculum included
- Textbook purchased seperately
- 200+ practice questions
- No exam pass refund guarantee
- $899.00 for starter package
NASM Overview
The NASM CPT from the National Academy of Sports Medicine starts at $999 for Self-Study with the exam included, is NCCA accredited, and teaches the OPT model, NASM’s own training model, alongside strong corrective exercise coverage.
The NASM is a great choice for future trainers to pursue, and I rank it third because of its high credibility in the industry. The study materials are excellent too, with a clean online portal and a lot of instructional video.
The tradeoff is price and exam difficulty. Self-Study has the highest entry price of the seven, and you need Premium Self-Study if you want an exam retest or the job guarantee included.
The exam to book: the proctored NASM CPT exam, not NASM’s non-accredited, open-book pathway.
- Entry price: $999 Self-Study includes the self-paced online course with the digital textbook built in, learner orientation, instructional videos, quizzes, practice exams, flashcards in the EDGE app and the NCCA exam
- Upgrade worth knowing: Premium Self-Study at $1,243 adds one exam retest, a Study Support Coach and a job guarantee
- Pass rate: 66%
- Prerequisites: high school diploma or GED and CPR/AED
- Average study time: 2 to 3 months. NASM puts the average at about 8 to 12 weeks, and says some candidates finish in four to six weeks
NASM Pros and Cons
- One of the best-known names on a resume
- Strong corrective exercise and behavior change coverage
- Highest entry price of the seven
- Challenging exam
For the full picture, read my NASM review and try my free NASM study guide. I also compare the two in IPTA vs. NASM.

That wraps up what we consider to be the top 3 NCCA accredited personal training certifications. Now, let’s move on and look at another option with NSCA.
4. NSCA-CPT: Best lead-in to strength and conditioning
NSCA CPT General Information

- Study material: not included (textbook, quizzes, and study guides sold separately)
- Prerequisites: CPR/AED, High School Diploma
- Exam passing score: Scaled score of 70
- Exam pass rate: 66%
- Retake fee: $435 (the full exam fee again)
- Recertification: $35 to $90 every 3 years; 6.0 CEUs (60 hours)
- Average completion time: 6 months

NSCA Personal Training Certification
- Entry price: $781 non-member (exam $435 plus Essential Collection $346)
- Study material: Not included with the exam. The CPT Essential Collection is $346
- Prerequisites: CPR/AED and high school diploma
- Exam format: 155 questions (140 scored), 180 minutes, proctored with some video clips
- Exam passing score: Scaled score of 70
- Exam pass rate: 66%
- Retake fee: $435 non-member, $300 member
- Recertification: Every 3 years, 6.0 CEUs (60 hours), $35 to $90
- Average study time: Varies with your background
NSCA Overview
The NSCA-CPT from the National Strength and Conditioning Association costs $781 as a non-member for the exam plus the CPT Essential Collection and stands out for its science, practical application and lead-in to advanced certifications. It is also NCCA accredited.
I rank NSCA fourth, and it is the one I recommend if you know you want the NSCA CSCS later. In my opinion the CSCS is the gold standard in strength and conditioning.
The tradeoff is cost structure and delivery. The exam is not included in any study collection, the Essential Collection has no video or audio, and a retake costs the full exam fee again.
- Entry price: $781 non-member is the $435 exam plus the $346 CPT Essential Collection (textbook, PDF study guide, quizzes and one practice test). The member route is $573 plus the $130 membership
- Upgrade worth knowing: the Platinum Collection at $585 non-member adds the Exercise Technique Manual
- Pass rate: 66%
- Prerequisites: CPR/AED and high school diploma
- Average study time: varies with your background
Pros and Cons
- Strong lead-in to a strength and conditioning career
- Dense, science-heavy textbook
- Exam and study materials sold separately, with no video instruction
- Highest retake fee of the seven

- Exam passing score: 70%
- Exam pass rate: 69%
- Retake fee: $99 in US and Canada, $299 elsewhere
- Recertification: Every 2 years, 10 CEUs (20 hours), $85
- Average study time: 2 to 3 months

- 800+ practice questions
- Highest exam pass rate
- Exam pass refund guarantee
- Cheaper pricing than NCSF materials
- Curriculum study preparation
- Video and written curriculum included
- Textbook purchased separately
- 200+ practice questions
- No exam pass refund guarantee
- $419.00 for starter package
NCSF Overview
The NCSF-CPT from the National Council on Strength and Fitness starts at $449 on sale with the exam included, is NCCA accredited, and pairs an e-learning portal with a textbook that covers the essential knowledge you’ll need as a new trainer.
I rank NCSF fifth, and I recommend it if you want to learn the basics. The textbook is easy to read, and the e-learning portal puts the instructional videos, lesson notes, flash cards and review quizzes alongside it.
NCSF’s materials are inexpensive, but they are less comprehensive than IPTA, NASM, or ISSA. There is less on behavioral coaching and business, and a little less on special populations and flexibility, which is why I score Study Materials at 7.
On fees, a retake is $99 in the US and Canada and renewal is $85 every two years.
The trade is brand. NCSF is a lesser-known name, which is why its Credibility and Reputation score is a 6.
- Entry price: $449 on sale ($899 list) includes the e-learning platform, digital textbook with optional hard copy, instructional videos, lesson notes, questions and answers, digital flash cards, review quizzes, expert instructor support, a one-year membership and the NCCA exam
- Upgrade worth knowing: CPT plus Sport Nutrition or CPT plus Strength Coach at $749 each, or Master Trainer at $999
- Pass rate: 69%
- Prerequisites: 18 years of age
- Average study time: 2 to 3 months
NCSF Pros and Cons
- Complete study platform with the exam included
- Video, lesson notes and quizzes in one place
- Lesser-known brand name
- Less behavioral coaching and business coverage
My full NCSF review has the details, and my free NCSF study guide is a good first look. Deciding between the two? See IPTA vs. NCSF.

Now, let’s look into a well-known and established organization like ACSM.

- Highest exam pass rate
- Exam pass refund guarantee
- Cheaper pricing than ACE materials
- Curriculum study preparation
- Video and written curriculum included
- Textbook purchased seperately
- 200+ practice questions
- No exam pass refund guarantee
- $587 for starter package (subject to change)
ACE Overview
The ACE-CPT from the American Council on Exercise starts at $692.40 (Basic at $593.40 on sale at the time of writing, plus the $99 NCCA accredited exam that no package includes), is NCCA accredited, and is great for general personal training and for assisting with behavior change.
I rank ACE sixth, and I recommend it if you want one of the best-known names in the industry. It is a reputable, well recognized certification.
The catch is the exam structure. Every ACE package includes the open-book Certificate Exam, and that is not the accredited one. In other words, the exam you came for is the one that is not in the box.
The exam to book: the $99 proctored NCCA accredited exam. Check that your cart shows it before you pay.
- Entry price: $692.40 is Basic plus the $99 accredited exam. Basic includes ACE University, one practice test, the digital Study Companion, the digital textbook, basic ACE Answers support and the Certificate Exam
- Upgrade worth knowing: Plus at $701.40 adds a hard copy textbook, an anatomy course, live Q&A webinars and a second practice test. Advantage at $1,049.40 has four practice tests, an audiobook and facilitated study groups. Both are before the $99 accredited exam
- Pass rate: 69%
- Prerequisites for the accredited exam: 18 or older, high school diploma or equivalent, and a current adult CPR and AED certificate with a live skills check
- Average study time: 3 to 6 months
ACE Pros and Cons
- Strong behavior change coaching
- One of the best-known names in the industry
- Higher fees: $249 to retake and $129 to renew every two years
- Less focus on corrective exercise and business building
My full ACE review and free ACE study guide cover the rest. I put the two side by side in IPTA vs. ACE.

- Recertification: $60 every 3 years; 45 CECs
- Average completion time: 3 to 9 months
- Complete curriculum study preparation

- Highest exam pass rate
- Exam pass refund guarantee
- Cheaper deals than ACSM pricing
- Curriculum study preparation
- Includes CPT Prep course
- 200+ practice questions
- Facebook CPT group (free)
- No exam pass refund guarantee
- $600+ for study course, textbooks additional $80+
ACSM Overview
The ACSM-CPT from the American College of Sports Medicine starts at $565 (the $410 non-member exam plus $155 for ACSM’s two prep textbooks), is NCCA accredited, and has exercise science, anatomy and biomechanics coverage that I rate as good as anything in the industry.
I rank ACSM seventh for most new personal trainers, but it suits a trainer heading toward the research and clinical side. Its screening and behavior coaching sections are strong.
The tradeoff is that (like NSCA) the exam fee buys no study material. You add the official preparation book and a second recommended text, and the pass rate is the lowest of the seven, so plan extra study time.
- Entry price: $565 is the $410 non-member exam plus ACSM’s Resources for the Personal Trainer, 6th edition, and ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, 12th edition, at $155 combined
- Upgrade worth knowing: the Prep Bundle at $559 non-member includes the exam and a prep course, and Prep Bundle Plus at $609 adds a practice test. Neither includes a textbook
- Pass rate: 61%
- Prerequisites: high school diploma and CPR/AED
- Average study time: not published by ACSM
Pros and Cons
- Suits a clinical or research direction
- Strong screening and exercise science coverage
- No all-in-one online course with the exam included
- Less depth on program design and exercise technique

Which NCCA accredited certification is right for you?
Match the certification to your situation, not to the marketing.
- Tightest budget: IPTA’s Rookie package at $399, the lowest entry price of the seven, with the exam, the digital textbook with its AI tutor, the study guide, the exam simulator and flashcards included.
- Shortest study time: IPTA, at an average of 4 to 8 weeks, the shortest figure of the seven.
- Best value: IPTA’s MVP package at $799, which currently includes a second certification, free unlimited retakes, a free first recertification and the business and career bonuses in the IPTA entry above.
- Retake and renewal fees: NCSF charges $99 to retake in the US and Canada and $85 to renew. ISSA also charges $99 to retake. On IPTA’s MVP package at $799, retakes are free and unlimited and the first renewal is free.
- Brand recognition: NASM or ACE. I recommend either if name recognition matters most at the gyms you are targeting.
- Strength and conditioning direction: NSCA, as long as you are fine with text-driven study and no video.
- Clinical or research direction: ACSM. Budget for the two textbooks and extra study time.
- Adding nutrition and a specialization right away: ISSA’s Elite Trainer bundle.
If studying fully online matters most to you, my guide to online personal trainer certifications covers that angle.
Before you buy anything, check with the gyms you want to work at about which certifications they accept.

Which exam is the accredited one at ISSA, NASM and ACE?
ISSA, NASM and ACE each sell two exams, and only the proctored one counts.
| Provider | NCCA accredited exam to book | The other exam that is not NCCA accredited |
|---|---|---|
| ISSA | Proctored NCCPT CPT exam, not open book | ISSA’s own open-book, untimed exam |
| NASM | Proctored NASM CPT exam, closed book | Non-accredited, open-book pathway. NASM’s product page lists NCCA accreditation as optional |
| ACE | NCCA accredited exam, proctored in person or live remote, a $99 add-on to any package | Included Certificate Exam, 100 questions, 70%, open book, non-proctored |
How do you check whether a certification is NCCA accredited?
Search the NCCA’s public directory of accredited programs by program or organization name. Confirm that the exact program is listed as accredited, and note its accredited-through date.
If the organization has no industry set, like Brookbush, the industry filter can hide it, so search by name. A listing covers that single program and its exam, not the whole organization or its study materials.
What does it mean to be NCCA accredited?
NCCA stands for National Commission for Certifying Agencies. It is the accreditation body of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence, or ICE.
The NCCA accredits individual certification programs that assess professional competency. It does not accredit organizations, courses or study materials.
To earn accreditation, a program must meet 23 standards covering processes, policies, scoring, exam administration, program quality and maintenance. Accreditation follows a five-year renewal cycle, which is why every program has an accredited-through date.
A directory listing should not be read as an endorsement of the program, its parent organization, individuals or the products and services they provide.
How much should it matter to you? Many gyms ask for an NCCA accredited certification, so I recommend you treat accreditation as your entry filter. Then choose among the accredited options by price with study material included, how you learn best and the career direction you want.
Frequently asked questions
What does NCCA stand for?
NCCA stands for National Commission for Certifying Agencies. It is the accreditation body of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE), and it accredits individual certification programs, not organizations or courses.
What certifications are NCCA accredited?
As of October 7, 2026, 14 personal trainer certification programs were listed as NCCA accredited in the NCCA directory: IPTA CPT, ACE-CPT, ACSM-CPT, ACTION CPT, Brookbush BI CPT, IFPA-PFT, NASM CPT, NCCPT CPT sold through ISSA, NCSF-CPT, NESTA PFT, NETA-CPT, NFPT CPT, NSCA-CPT and WITS Personal Trainer Certification Level I.
Is ISSA NCCA accredited?
Yes, through the proctored NCCPT CPT exam that ISSA sells, which is accredited through May 31, 2031. ISSA’s own open-book, untimed exam is not NCCA accredited.
Is NASM NCCA accredited?
Yes. The NASM CPT is NCCA accredited through November 30, 2031. Book the proctored NASM CPT exam, because NASM also has a non-accredited, open-book pathway.
Is ACE NCCA accredited?
Yes. The ACE-CPT is NCCA accredited through March 31, 2029, but the accredited exam is a $99 add-on to any ACE study package.
Is IPTA NCCA accredited?
Yes. The IPTA CPT is NCCA accredited through November 30, 2029. Only the CPT is accredited. IPTA’s other certifications are not.
How important is NCCA accreditation?
It is the first thing I would check. Many gyms ask for an NCCA accredited certification, though requirements vary from gym to gym, so confirm with the gyms you want to work at. Accreditation tells you the program met an outside standard, and after that the right choice comes down to price, how you learn and where you want your career to go.
What is the cheapest NCCA accredited personal trainer certification?
Of the seven certifications I rank, IPTA’s Rookie package at $399 has the lowest entry price, and it includes the exam, the digital textbook with its AI tutor, the study guide, the exam simulator and flashcards. Exam-only options like NFPT at $299 and ACTION at $99 plus a proctor fee are lower but do not include study material. My guide to the cheapest personal trainer certifications goes further.
What is the fastest NCCA accredited personal trainer certification?
Going by each organization’s own figure, IPTA has the shortest average study time of the seven certifications I rank, at 4 to 8 weeks. NASM puts its average at about 8 to 12 weeks, NCSF says 2 to 3 months, ISSA says 3 months or more and ACE says 3 to 6 months, while NSCA and ACSM do not publish a single figure. How long it takes you depends on your background and the hours you can study each week.
What is the easiest NCCA accredited personal trainer certification?
PT Pioneer pass rates for ISSA, ACE, NCSF, NASM, NSCA and ACSM range from 75% for ISSA’s accredited NCCPT exam to 61% for ACSM, with ACE and NCSF at 69% and NASM and NSCA at 66%. See my guide to the easiest personal training certifications for more.
Can you be a personal trainer without a certification?
There is no government rule that says you must be certified, and it is not illegal to train people without a credential. It is much harder to show employers and clients that you are qualified, though, so I do not recommend it. My guide on how to become a personal trainer walks through the steps.
Your next step
Pick the certification that fits your budget and goal, confirm it in the NCCA directory, and make sure the exam in your cart is the accredited one.
If you are still undecided, start with IPTA. Its Rookie package has the lowest entry price of the seven at $399, and its average study time of 4 to 8 weeks is the shortest figure of the seven. Its MVP package at $799 is my pick for best value.

Have a question?

Hi mate,
Why there are as many complaints from professionals as the difficulty and the difference in salary when you have ISSA certification ?
Thank you and great job !!
There is no difference in terms of personal trainer salary for the people that have the international sports Sciences Association certification. In fact, now they are accredited by the MCCA since January 2020. Good luck with your personal training career.
Shouldn’t this be updated with ISSA’s newest NCCA exams for CPT?
Thanks for pointing this out, I will update this list. Finally ISSA is NCCA accredited.
Hii,
I just want to know that certificate provided from ALISON University for CPT is a valid one or not??
I have never heard of this personal training certification to be honest. But there are always new ones popping up and is good for me to do more in-depth research in order to fill out my website. Thanks for pointing this out.
What do you think of the NPTI (National Personal Training Institute) program? From what I’ve read, the school offers hands on gym training & classroom instruction vs that of an online program, however, it’s more pricey & I’m not sure if it’s NCCA accredited. I also wonder if it’s recognized & taken seriously by companies looking to hire personal trainers.
Hey Lisa,
The national personal training Institute is a fantastic program overall in you will get tons of hands-on training experience that will be very helpful for when you actually start training individuals. In fact, they probably have the most hands-on experience compared to any other programs I talked about on this website. Kept up being said, they are very costly and they are still not currently Currently accredited by the national Commission for certifying agencies Otherwise known as the NCCA. You can tell this by a list on their website https://nationalpti.org/npti-personal-trainer-certification-comparison/. The biggest problem is that some people do not accept non NCCA Accredited certification still although that is slowly changing in the personal training industry. Don’t get me wrong though, it is still recognized by tons of employers. Might want to check with the potential employers in your area before you start going for it. I hope this helps.
Is muscle neerds a good personal trainer organization?
That’s a good question, I’ve never heard of them up until this point So all have to check it out.
Is AFAA Personal Fitness Trainer the same as NASM since they have merged companies?
Hey Ben,
This is a great question that I would love to answer for you. Although the national Academy of sports medicine has merged with The aerobics And fitness Association of America, they are still two completely separate certifications. You can purchase either one from the NASM website. They are both fantastic options but I think as a starting personal trainer, NASM is definitely the gold standard. I hope this helps.
Would ACE personal training be recognized overseas? I live in Ireland.
Hey Amber,
The material I put on my website is basically just for the United States because that’s where I live. Every area has different requirements for certifications as well as accreditation. I suggest you check with the local gymnasiums in Ireland to see which certifications they accept. Is very possible that they do accept ACE but I can’t guarantee that for you.
You are missing W.I.T.S. from your list…they received their NCCA accreditation in 2017.
Hey Amy,
Thanks for pointing this out to me! I will check them out and add them to the list
i would like to join this ACE to be a personal fitness trainer
Hey Betty,
The American Council on exercise training certification is an excellent choice.
Your link to NCCA goes to a website in Ireland, not the correct NCCA site.
Hey Ted, I will check this out thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
so is ISSA any good or not? Do many people recognize or reject it?
The ISSA, although not accredited by the NCCA, is a fantastic certification overall. In fact, it is one of the top five certifications I am recommending to the visitors of my website as really grown over the last five years to be a premier certification. I suggest checking out my article here on the top personal training certifications. https://www.ptpioneer.com/best-personal-trainer-certification-guide/ I hope this helps and if you have any other questions don’t forget to drop a comment.
WITS? Any good?
Hey Mary,
Good question I will look into the certification and added to my list if it’s legitimate.
Hi
Great source of info on your website
Though do you have the official link so that I can verify the list of PT certifications accredited?
Thank you
best regards
Philip
Hey Philip, I am not quite sure what you mean by an official link so that you can verify that they are each accredited.
Like, a link to NCCA where they list the accredited CPT programs.
I am not sure if NCCA has a list that you speak of. This is from knowledge of all the personal training certifications that I know that are NCCA accredited.
yes NCCA ‘s website has the official list. I will try and send link to you.
Hey Mark,
Thank you for stopping by and I’m looking forward to seeing the link you provide.
