How to Pass the NASM Certification Exam
On top of completing the training courses, I have some general tips for taking the NASM exam.
Read Every Single Question and Answer
One of the biggest reasons people miss 3 to 5 questions on the test is that they do not read over the entire question or all possible answers before making their decision.
This is very important. Read over the full question. Then read over every single possible answer. Think about all of the possibilities, and then make your final decision.
The wording on the NASM can be very tricky. In fact, at times, it feels like they are purposely trying to mislead you at the beginning of the question. The only way around this is to read out the questions completely.
Pay Attention to Specific Words for Questions Related to Exercises
The next NASM CPT exam tip for you guys is to pay attention to certain keywords related to specific exercise questions and the OPT training model.
Big tip 1: Any time that you see the words Bosu ball, stability ball, or one leg, the majority of the time, that answer will apply to the stability phase of the OPT training model.
Big tip 2: Any time you see jumping exercises or exercises involving a medicine ball, they typically apply to the reactive/power phase of the OPT training model.
Remember to learn exercise techniques and behavior change
You need to learn the exercise and spotting techniques to reduce the risk of injury when training with weights. Implementing progressive overload and training practices is also a must.
Consider the anatomy and injury history variation in your client’s data. An exam study guide is another great way to get sample questions. NASM is no joke, so prepare before your CPT examination.
Another category is behavioral change. For example, SMART goal development, active listening, and assisting with tough changes like food choice.

NASM Practice Test Success Stories
Before you head out, I want to mention a few success stories from my students and trainers who crushed the NASM exam.
One of my students, Linda, passed the NASM exam on her first try in less than 2 months using the Trainer Academy NASM CPT Study System. She found the spaced repetition flashcards exceptionally helpful for speeding up her studying time.
Another student, Daryl, failed the NASM exam twice before finally trying a third-party study system. The massive number of practice questions helped him overcome his test anxiety; he took many Trainer Academy NASM practice tests and passed on his next attempt.
I should mention that I have other students who just used the standard NASM study program that comes with the basic program and passed on the first attempt.
Your study strengths, needs, and prior knowledge of human anatomy and training methods determine which study system makes the most sense.
On a final note, remember the requirements to sit for the exam are CPR and AED certification card and GED or high school diploma. When you go to the PSI testing center, the test format is multiple choice via computer, split into two sections.
Candidates have to turn in their devices when entering the testing area. You will also need a government ID card as well.
