Body Beast vs P90x: what are the differences?

Body beast is meant to purely build muscle mass whereas P90x is meant to burn body fat while maintaining muscle and teach functional training. The differences between both programs depend on your goals. Both of them are great at-home workout products. Either Body beast or P90x will change your body for the better.

The biggest three tips in order to be successful with either program.

  1. Purchase either program with a challenge pack. The clients of mine that go through either program on shakeology see significantly better results than those who don’t.
  2. Make sure to sign up with me Tyler Read as your coach (and certified personal trainer) otherwise you will get assigned a random coach that is probably not as qualified, and might not even contact you. My coach ID is 1339221. I will help you on your reach your goals and provide great motivation!
  3. Get beach body on demand instead of DVD packages. If I had this when I first started using P90x it would’ve saved me so much money overall over the last 12 years. No more worrying about scratched DVDs or bringing DVDs with you. Also, most people don’t know which program to start out with (and frequently choose the wrong one),  You have access to all of them with beachbody on demand! You have to purchase the equipment for the program separately.

Body Beast vs P90x: Overview

Body beast overview

Body beast is a 90 day workout program that is focused on building muscle mass and strength. As instructed by the two-time Mr. Israel bodybuilding champion Sagi Kalev. Sagi is a pretty big guy. I don’t want to be as big as him (and I don’t think I ever could with my genetics) but he is the perfect person to follow if you are trying to build muscle mass. He makes the workouts fun and entertaining so that you don’t lose focus on your goals. It is built behind the concept of dynamic sets training which helps recruit the maximum amount of muscle fibers in order to promote hypertrophy (muscular growth).

The program is broken down into three separate parts. Each part will last one month long. They go as follows: the build mode, bulk mode and beast mode. Unlike all other beach body products, body beast is purely about building size. This means that the diet plan will make you eat more than you are used to. The fact you will be in a calorie surplus in order to build the muscle that you desire. Although the program seems like it was designed only for men, I highly recommend women do it as well. The feminine but strong look is much sexier than the skinny model look. Overall the program consists of 12 DVDs with 12 separate workouts. Check out my Body beast calendar to view the whole workout.

There are you packages to choose from with body beast. I’m going to go over each of them one by one. Click on the link to find out more information. You can also get the programs on, but remember that I will not become your personal coach compared to if you bought it from the beachbody site using my coach ID! Amazon is a great place to read ton of reviews though.

  1. The base package comes with the 11 workouts (with one additional workout), the body beast eating plan, a 90 day training schedule, the book of beast, 24 hour online support, a body beast mobile app and a 90 day money back guarantee.
  2. The body beast deluxe package includes everything that the basic kit did with the addition of a one-month supply of beach body performance (pre-workout supplement) and one additional workout called tempo.
  3. The body beast ultimate package includes everything that the deluxe package did  with the addition of a one-month supply of beach body performance recovery (post workout drink).
  4. The body beast challenge pack combines shakeology nutrition with the routine (recommended for best results).

P90x overview

The original P90x on the other hand focuses on a style of training that is much different than body beast. Overall the program will put you in a calorie deficit and is meant for people that want to lose weight and get shredded. This program is also three months long and contains 12 different workouts from 12 different DVDs as well. The instructor for P90x is Tony Horton. Overall I would say that he is my second favorite workout instructor of all time. The only instructor I find better than him is Shaun T from Insanity, Max 30, Insanity asylum, Cize and others. Tony is an incredibly good shape for how old is. He is overall a lot sleeker and ripped than Sagi. This is closer to the body type that I would like to achieve.

The main principle behind P90x is called muscle confusion. It will mix things up with tons of different types of exercises in a circuit like fashion in order to keep your body guessing so that your body can adapt and transform. They pull exercises from a lot of different disciplines such as yoga, resistance training and cardiovascular training. These workouts are extremely hard in terms of cardiovascular intensity. The repetition ranges are much larger compared to body beast. And there is a lot more variability in the type of exercises you do in P90x. To get a better idea of the P90x program you can check out my P90x calendar here!

There are four different packages that are available for the original P90x. Follow the links to find out a little bit more in information about each package.

  1. The base kit includes all 12 workouts (with two bonus workouts), a three phase nutrition plan,  a fitness guide, how to bring it video, a 90 day calendar, online support  as well is a 90 day moneyback guarantee.
  2. The deluxe package includes everything that the base package did with the addition of a chin up bar, program grade jump mat, one month of beach body performance recover (postworkout drink) and three levels of resistance bands.
  3. The ultimate package includes all of that as well as chin-ups Max (resistance bands that help assist pull-ups), Tony Horton’s power stands and three additional one-on-one advanced workouts.
  4. The challenge pack option combines shakeology nutrition with the P90x workouts (highly recommended).

Body Beast vs P90x: who are they meant for?

I touched upon this topic a little bit above, but let’s talk a little bit more about it. Body beast is meant for “hard gainers”. This means people that have a hard time building muscular size and are naturally skinny. Another word for this is ectomorph. Growing up, I was a hard gainer myself and I know how hard it can be to build muscle. Bodybeast will end up shocking your body with the diet plan that they provide, as well as the intense weightlifting routines that they give you. I guarantee that you will gain noticeable size in the three-month period.

P90x on the other hand is meant for people that want to drop body fat, tone up and get more athletic. There are a ton of core strengthening movements, stabilization exercises, body weight exercises, resistance training and a lots of cardiovascular workouts! These workouts leave you panting and sweating! If you feel you are to have a sufficient amount of muscle mass and your main goal is to lose body fat, P90x should be your go to instead of body beast. If you are are overweight or obese, P90x should be the program you start with.

Body Beast vs P90x: The quality of the workouts and results

The quality of the workouts for both body beast and P90x are fantastic. Let’s just start off by saying that. P90x will really push you hard in terms of a cardiovascular challenge. Body beast on the other hand will push your muscles to contract like they have never contracted before. Your muscles will burn a ton and you will get a fantastic muscular pump from body beast.

In terms of the body beast results and P90x results that you can expect, that is all based on your individual goals. If you go into P90x expecting to build a lot of muscle, you will be disappointed. On the other hand, if you go into body beast expecting to get shredded, you will also be disappointed. If you would like to build muscle, do the body beast routine and you will have fantastic results when you come out. If you want to lose body fat, do the three months of P90x, and you will have fantastic results as well!

Body Beast vs P90x: Differences in the diet programs

The difference between the P90x and body beast diet programs all comes down to calories. They both suggest you eat healthy foods such as whole grains, vegetables and protein sources such as meats and fish. They both tell you to avoid the same foods as well. The only difference is how many calories are recommended for you each day based off of your basal metabolic rate. During body beast you will be in a calorie surplus and during P90x you will be in a deficit. The other thing that is different is the recipes that they will provide you for each program.

Both programs work with and are designed for the use of shakeology. Myself as well as my clients have seen better results from using shakeology nutrition alongside either of these programs. If you have never heard of it before check out my review here or my article explaining how it works here.

Body Beast vs P90x: equipment that is required

P90x equipment that is required

  • You will need resistance bands or dumbbells(I recommend adjustable dumbbells)
  • You will need a pull-up bar
  • You will need a push-up stand
  • You will need a comfortable workout mat

Body beast equipment that is required

Overall body beast requires much more equipment in order to have effective workouts. This is because they require a lot heavier weights in order to perform the routine. Let’s talk more about the equipment.

  • You will need a set of dumbbells (again I recommend adjustable dumbbells)
  • You will need an adjustable barbell with a weights
  • You will need an EZ curl bar (a different type of barbell)
  • You will need weight plates (to add to your adjustable barbell)
  • The last thing you’ll need is an adjustable bench
